Car Insurance Sterling (Car Insurance). 1985 Ford pickup truck, when im going down the road?

1985 Ford pickup truck, when im going down the road? with my foot on the gas pedal it will just start to slow down and then when i push the gas to make it go faster it doesnt want to, plus there is a burning rubber smell. Had this problem for a couple of days and now it will not crank up. any ideas of what this could possibly be?

Low fuel psi can cause this (running lean hot) Carburetor must be warned off. when you step on the gas pedal the fuel - air mixture isn't right so the engine runs very insufficiently and what tends to happen is the cylinders burn more fuel and is actually destroying your engine chip by chip. when the engine overheats it actually smells like burning rubber.and actually is also the smell when the radiator is goint to overheat. take to an mechanic

Sterling . How to Diagnose Power Steering Problems

The steering system in your car is made up of several components that can fail after years of use. Some problems may be obvious as soon as they start; others may become apparent too late, forcing you to replace major components. Take steps to diagnose some of the most common steering problems and look for signs of minor problems that could develop into serious ones.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
Floor jack and two jack stands
Flashlight
Shop rag

Step by Step :
1
Check the power steering fluid if your car is hard to steer. Lack of steering fluid makes it hard to turn the steering wheel. Other possible problems include worn steering gear and ball sockets in the steering assembly, worn suspension system components and loose steering pump belt.
2
Open the hood and start the engine. Ask someone to turn the steering wheel while you listen at the steering pump. If you can hear the pump make a whine and loud noise, the belt might be slipping. Adjust the belt if necessary. Also, lack of steering fluid may cause the noise. Add fluid if necessary, then turn the steering wheel completely to the left and right several times to purge air from the system.
3
Start the engine and ask someone to turn the steering wheel left and right. Check for loose or worn parts at the steering column, steering assembly connecting to the steering column, connecting arms at both ends of the assembly and steering assembly mounting brackets. Worn or loose steering components may produce loud noises and excessive play at the steering wheel. Take the car to an auto shop for further inspection if necessary.
4
Lift the front of the car using a floor jack and safely support it on jack stands. Ask someone to wiggle each of the front wheels left and right while you watch the wheel assembly connection to the steering system assembly. Look for loose or worn out components. The assembly should remain solid as the wheel is moved back and forth.
5
Inspect the steering pump, connecting hoses and lines around the steering assembly and look for possible leaks using a flashlight if necessary. If you frequently add fluid to the steering pump, the steering mechanism might have a leak. Clean steering components with a shop rag and recheck a couple of days later. You might find a loose hose clamp, torn hose, broken line or crack on the steering pump.
Tips & Warnings
Worn or loose steering components may cause the vehicle to wander from side to side as you drive even when keeping the steering wheel straight.

If you cannot find and correct the problem, take the vehicle to an auto shop as soon as possible to avoid a possible traffic accident.

Sterling . About Power Steering

Improvements in automotive power steering system design are increasing driver and passenger safety with better vehicle maneuverability and control on the road. These new power steering systems are constantly trying to strike a balance between vehicle handling and road feel, so you know how much effort to apply to the steering wheel when turning a corner, bumping into a rock on the road or fighting a strong wind to maintain vehicle stability.
Identification
Most vehicles use one of three power steering systems: integral-piston linkage, external cylinder power steering and rack-and-pinion systems. Many of these systems are power driven by the engine through a pulley and drive belt mounted in front of the crankshaft, but a few models have the pulley at the back. This configuration reduces the number of components that attach to the front of the crankshaft.
FunctionA power steering assembly with electric motor assist-photo JMPerez at Common Wikimedia.org.
A power steering system may use a hydraulic pump or an electric motor to help you steer the vehicle without much effort. An oil pump, driven by the engine crankshaft through a drive belt, provides pressure to a cylinder-piston assembly linked to the steering wheel; an oil valve within the steering assembly directs oil to the left or right of the steering cylinder, depending on steering wheel movement. An electric motor can also be used to act on a series of gears in the steering system to accomplish the same goal.
Warning
Whatever steering power system you use, regular checkups and maintenance are necessary. When adding oil to a steering pump operated system, do not overfill the reservoir tank or oil could spray out of the system. Also, if you need to replace a drive belt, do not pry on the pump body to tighten the belt; the pump body is made of thin material and may brake easily.
Potential
Some automakers are increasing the use of electronic steering systems. An electric motor installed inside or outside the main power steering shaft mechanism acts on a gear assembly to assist in vehicle maneuverability. This eliminates the need for hoses, pump, drive belt and pulleys. Others manufacturers are installing four-wheel steering on some of their high-performance vehicles, making all four wheels turn to provide better stability, handling and movement control at low and high speeds.
Expert InsightSteering wheel play is a common problem-photo Jean-Etienne Poirrier at Commons Wikimedia.org.
As a driver, the most common problem you will encounter with the power steering system in your vehicle is steering wheel play. A quick and easy test can tell you the condition of the system's mechanism. Just turn the ignition switch on but do not start the engine and move the steering wheel back and forth. As a general rule, you should not be able to turn the steering wheel more then 1 1/2 inches or 33 mm without wheel movement; otherwise, have your power steering system checked.

Firing order Don't confuse cylinder sequence with firing order. Although your engine may have its cylinders in simple numerical sequence, if the cylinders were fired in that order, the engine would rock violently as first the cylinders on one side (or toward the front) fired in rapid succession, and then the other cylinders did likewise. To avoid this, the firing order is carefully arranged to distribute the shock of combustion evenly throughout the engine. The cylinders fire in very swift sequence, and the result is a fairly stable engine. A typical firing order for a Ford V-8 engine (with cylinders #1 to #4 on one side and cylinders #5 to #8 on the other) would be #1, #5, #4, #2, #6, #3, #7, #8. The firing order is printed inside each of the engines shown in Figures 12-2 through 12-8. Trace the path of combustion back and forth throughout each of these engines so you can see how the shock of combustion is distributed to avoid rocking the engine. Remember, the whole thing happens very rapidly. '>art'"' ^eeP'n9 ^our Car m G°°d Condition, System by System Removing the spark plugs

To maintain the proper firing order, each spark-plug wire must go from the proper terminal on your distributor cap to the proper spark plug, so before you remove anything, label each wire with its proper number in the cylinder sequence. To label your wires, place a piece of masking tape or a clothespin on the spark plug wire near the boot that covers the tip of each plug. Put the proper cylinder number on each one. If you also label the boot where each wire enters the distributor cap terminal, you'll never be unsure about hooking things up properly. (Of course, if you make it a habit to remove the wire from only one plug at a time and to put it back before you remove another, you won't ever get into trouble — unless another wire comes off accidentally.) One way to royally confuse yourself and make the relatively simple task of changing spark plugs into a nightmare is to pull all your spark plugs out at one time. To keep your sanity and to avoid turning this job into an all-weekend project, work on one spark plug at a time: Remove it, inspect it, clean it, and, if it's salvageable, gap it. Then replace it — before you move on to the next spark

plug. After you label the wires, follow these steps to remove each spark plug: 1. Gently grasp a spark plug wire by the boot, where it connects to the spark plug. Never yank on the wire itself (you can damage the wiring); just grasp the boot, twist it, and pull it straight out so that you can pull it off the plug. The shiny thing sticking out of the engine block is the terminal of the spark plug. Figure 12-10, later in this chapter, shows you all the parts of a spark plug, including the terminal. 2. Use a nice soft rag or a small paint brush to clean around the area where the spark plug enters the block — or you can blow the dirt away with a soda straw. Doing so keeps loose junk from falling down the hole into the cylinder when the plug is removed. 3. Find your spark plug socket (the big one with the rubber lining) and place it down over the spark plug; exert some pressure while turning it slightly to be sure that it's all the way down. Like everything else in auto repair, don't be afraid to use some strength. But do it in an even, controlled manner. If you bang or jerk things, you can damage them, but you'll never get anywhere if you tippy-toe around.
